Bengaluru, Sep 26 Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday said the state Cabinet will discuss the demand for a milk price hike before taking a final decision.
Speaking to reporters here, he said the presidents of district milk unions met him and sought an increase of Rs 12 per litre, of which Rs 2 could be passed on to milk producers’ cooperatives.
“We will examine it in the cabinet. I’m also getting reports on the situation in neighbouring states such as Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh,” Shivakumar said.
The milk unions were incurring losses at the existing price and farmers were discontented over the price issue.
“About 50,000 milk producers gathered here demanding a hike in milk prices. Our government is committed to protecting farmers, we will discuss it in the cabinet,” he said.
Milk unions and farmers have sought a hike in milk prices, citing a significant rise in fodder, fuel and other input costs, stating that the increase made a price revision inevitable.
