Beed, Sep 23 A sub-divisional officer (SDO) from Maharashtra’s Beed district was allegedly duped of Rs 30,000 by a caller who sought his help after falsely claiming that a collector’s vehicle had met with an accident, police said on Wednesday.
Majalgaon SDO Gaurav Sahebrao Ingole was defrauded on September 20, they said.
In his complaint, Ingole said he received a call, with the person on the other side saying the Mumbai suburban district collector’s son had suffered serious injuries following an accident on the Beed-Parli Vaijnath road.
The caller, who claimed to be a personal assistant of a former state minister, told Ingole that the collector’s son urgently needed treatment and money was required for that.
Ingole transferred Rs 30,000 in two instalments through a QR code sent by the caller. The money was sent from the bank account of Ingole’s brother, police said.
However, the SDO later became suspicious and contacted Beed District Collector Vivek Johnson to verify the information. After confirming that no such accident had taken place, he approached the Majalgaon Rural police station with a complaint.
A case has been registered, and a probe is underway, an official said.
