Mumbai, Sep 26 Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday said his party Shiv Sena will extend assistance to families of drought-affected farmers that have weddings scheduled.
Farmers in drought-affected regions face numerous challenges, with the cost of arranging their children’s weddings being a constant source of worry, Shinde pointed out.
“Due to drought, crop failures and debt, many farmers are unable to raise the money required for their children’s weddings, and some are driven to the extreme step of suicide. In an effort to prevent such families from taking this step and to relieve them of this financial burden, Shiv Sena has taken the initiative to provide assistance,” Shinde said.
Such families can contact the Shiv Sena’s local elected representatives and office-bearers for necessary assistance, the Deputy CM added.
The Maharashtra government on Saturday declared 265 of the 358 talukas in the state as drought-affected. The affected talukas comprise 75 per cent of the state’s total area, as per a government resolution.
