Dehradun, Sep 25 Uttarakhand Congress on Friday staged a protest and attempted to gherao the Secretariat here, demanding the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the other Election Commissioners, with annulment of decisions previously taken by them.
Party workers also burned an effigy of Kumar during the protest.
Led by Uttarakhand Congress President Ganesh Godiyal, and in the presence of state party in-charge Kumari Selja, Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya, former chief minister Harish Rawat, former state president Karan Mahra, and other leaders and MLAs, party workers held a demonstration and marched towards the state Secretariat.
Responding to a call by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), state Congress workers first gathered at the party’s state headquarters. From there, they marched towards the Secretariat while raising slogans.
However, the police stopped the Congress workers before they could reach the Secretariat by setting up barricades. A scuffle ensued between the Congress workers and the police during the confrontation.
Subsequently, Congress leaders submitted a memorandum addressed to the President of India to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Dehradun Sadar. The memorandum demanded the immediate removal and arrest of Gyanesh Kumar and the two Election Commissioners, as well as the revocation of decisions previously made by them.
Godiyal said that the party demands the immediate dismissal of Kumar and the registration of a sedition case against him for allegedly conspiring to invalidate the votes of 13 crore voters.
