Kolkata, Sep 25 A clash broke out between members of the CPI(M)’s students wing SFI and the RSS-affiliated ABVP at South Calcutta Law College here on Friday following a dispute over putting up organisational flags on the campus, college officials said.
The confrontation was triggered by slogan-shouting by members of the two student organisations over the installation of flags.
The issue subsequently spilt into a general body meeting of the SFI, with ABVP members protesting against what they described as “SFI dictatorship” on the campus.
Both sides accused each other of initiating the confrontation.
The ABVP alleged that its members were attacked by SFI activists, while the CPI(M)’s students wing denied the charge and accused the members of the RSS-affiliated organisation of assaulting its women activists.
SFI spokesperson Satyajit Bhandari said the college authorities had been informed about the installation of ABVP flags and that SFI members subsequently put up some flags in response.
He alleged that confrontation took place after the ABVP removed those flags.
ABVP leader Ananta Barui, however, alleged that SFI supporters, including outsiders, entered the campus and attacked their members.
Vice-Principal Dr Nayna Chatterji reiterated that no organisational flag would be allowed on the college premises.
Police personnel reached the campus following the altercation and the situation was brought under control.
There was no immediate official statement on whether any formal complaint had been lodged in connection with the incident by either side.
The latest confrontation has brought renewed attention to the functioning of South Calcutta Law College, which has been at the centre of several controversies in recent years.
The institution’s Kasba campus came under intense scrutiny in June 2025 following allegations that a 24-year-old law student was raped on the premises.
Police arrested three men in connection with the June 25, 2025 incident – Monojit Mishra, a former student and contractual staff member of the college, and two current students, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed.
