Bengaluru, Sep 23 The Karnataka government has constituted a SIT at the state-level to register and conduct a speedy probe into fraudulent claims received by insurance companies.
The development comes following the directive issued by the Supreme Court in August asking all states to constitute dedicated Special Investigation Teams to probe suspected fraudulent insurance claims.
According to a government order issued by the Home Department dated September 22, the SIT will be headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, CTRS (Crime and Technical Research Services wing), Bengaluru, as its Chairperson.
It will comprise the Superintendent of Police, CID (Officer nominated by the DGP, CID), a Deputy Superintendent of Police nominated by the DG & IGP and three Police Inspectors nominated by the DG & IGP as members, it said.
The SIT has been declared as a ‘Police Station’ under Section 2(1)(u) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, with jurisdiction extending across the State of Karnataka.
The investigating officers of the said SIT have been authorised to submit the final reports to the Jurisdictional Courts under Section 193 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, it said.
“This SIT will function under the supervision of the Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order), Police Headquarters, Bengaluru,” the order said.
The SIT shall periodically report the progress of the investigation to the Director General and Inspector General of Police through the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), it said.
“In connection with fraudulent claims by insurance companies, all complaints received from insurance companies shall be transferred by the DG & IGP to this SIT. Any officers/staff required for the Special Investigation Team shall be provided by the DG & IGP as and when required,” the order said.
The team has been directed to thoroughly investigate all complaints received from insurance companies regarding fraudulent claims and submit the investigation reports to the government without delay, through the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Bengaluru.
