Etah (UP), Sept 24 Five constables were suspended Thursday for assaulting and misbehaving with a trader in Aliganj town here over a dispute regarding closing his shop, officials said.
The action was taken after a purported video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting senior officials to order an inquiry.
According to police, constable Sandeep Singh had, on Wednesday night, gone to Lohari Darwaza locality to ask shopkeepers to close their establishments.
At this time, an argument allegedly broke out between him and a trader.
Later, Sandeep returned to the spot with other police personnel — Vineet, Anmol, Diwakar Singh and Mohit Valan, all constables — in civilian clothes and assaulted the trader with sticks, officials said.
The viral video shows the men in civilian clothes beating the trader.
Aliganj Circle Officer Rajesh Singh said an inquiry was conducted after the video surfaced and the five personnel were found involved.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Ilamaran G ordered suspension of all five with immediate effect, he said. “Indiscipline and misbehaviour with members of the public will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the SSP added.
