New Delhi, Sep 25 Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu made a surprise visit to the Bonta Park near the North Campus of the DU amid concerns raised over safety measures at the city parks after an alleged gangrape of a minor.
The 17-year-old girl from Faridabad was allegedly raped by three men posing as police personnel at the Aastha Kunj park in southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji area on Monday evening.
Sandhu was accompanied by Delhi Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma and senior police officers during his visit to assess on-ground security, lighting and steps to eliminate dark spots along the walkways in the park, the LG’s office said in a post on X.
Sandhu directed authorities to ensure that every public recreational space is well-lit, secure and regularly patrolled.
“Safety of women and children is a top priority. Every Delhiite should walk, exercise and enjoy our parks without fear,” he said.
Sandhu on Wednesday directed a safety audit of all city parks and deployment of Pink Police personnel around their premises following the alleged gangrape of the teenager.
He directed that the safety audit be conducted within a week, with emphasis on adequate lighting, security, regular patrolling and cleanliness.
All three accused in the Aastha Kunj Park “gangrape” have been arrested, with one of them sustaining a bullet injury on the leg in an encounter with police.
