New Delhi, Sep 25 CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Friday condemned the police crackdown on a protest staged by the SFI and the DYFI in Delhi demanding the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
In a post on X, the CPI(M) leader stressed that Kumar must be removed from office for undermining the credibility of the Election Commission (EC).
“Strongly condemn the Delhi Police crackdown on the SFI-DYFI protest demanding the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, revocation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and reforms to the Election Commission,” Baby said.
“Modi and Amit Shah are mistaken if they think the brutal use of force against peaceful students and youth, and the dragging of people’s representatives through the streets, will silence democratic protests,” he added.
“Gyanesh Kumar must be removed from office for undermining the credibility of the Election Commission. Cracking down on protests and suppressing dissent will not save him,” the Left leader said.
Several members of the CPI-M’s student and youth wings were detained on Friday as they staged a protest demanding the removal of the CEC. Rajya Sabha MPs A A Rahim and V Sivadasan, SFI president Adarsh M Saji and several Delhi office-bearers of the student organisation were detained during the demonstration.
The SFI said its Delhi unit secretary Sooraj Elamon, joint secretary Mehina Fathima, vice presidents Simran, Anil Sethumadhavan and Sagar Singal, and secretariat member Sakhi were among those detained.
