New Delhi, Sep 22 (PTI) The Delhi Police has busted an interstate counterfeit currency network with the arrest of two alleged key operatives from Delhi and Bodh Gaya and recovery of 187 fake Rs 500 notes with a face value of Rs 93,500, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Md Danish (35), allegedly involved in circulating the fake currency in Gandhi Nagar, and Md Meraj alias Guddu (36), the alleged supplier, police said.
The case came to light after a bank’s Gandhi Nagar branch detected 18 counterfeit Rs 500 notes worth Rs 9,000 deposited by a customer on August 22.
Police traced Danish through CCTV footage and local intelligence. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he procured counterfeit currency from Meraj in Jharkhand and circulated it through small cash purchases at shops in Gandhi Nagar.
Acting on the leads, a police team travelled to Bodh Gaya and arrested Meraj on August 26. Another 169 counterfeit Rs 500 notes worth Rs 84,500 were recovered from his bag, officials said.
Meraj allegedly disclosed that he had procured the counterfeit currency from two persons known as “Mama alias Chhotu” and “Bhaiya Ji”, who are suspected to be operating from Kalia Chowk in Malda, West Bengal.
The investigation has so far established a suspected counterfeit currency trail from Delhi to Bihar, Jharkhand and Malda, with police working to identify the original source and other members of the network. PTI SSJ SSJ NB
