New Delhi, Sep 25 The Delhi unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Friday held a demonstration outside the Delhi Police headquarters over concerns regarding the safety of women and female students in the national capital.
The RSS-backed student organisation demanded concrete and preventive measures by the Delhi Police to strengthen security around educational institutions and student-dominated areas.
The protest comes amid concerns over several recent incidents involving women and female students in Delhi, including the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl near Aastha Kunj Park in Kalkaji.
ABVP also referred to an alleged incident involving two Delhi University students near Haqiqat Park in Mukherjee Nagar and a complaint by a female student at Jawaharlal Nehru University regarding alleged inappropriate behaviour by outsiders near Tapti Hostel.
Following the demonstration, the organisation submitted a memorandum to the Delhi Police Commissioner seeking measures to improve women’s safety.
The demands include setting up a special committee of senior police officers to regularly review security arrangements around colleges, universities, hostels, paying guest accommodations, coaching centres and student-dominated areas.
The ABVP also sought security audits of dark spots and vulnerable locations, adequate street lighting, functional CCTV cameras and increased surveillance at sensitive locations.
It demanded enhanced police patrolling during evening and night hours around educational institutions, hostels, PG accommodations, parks, markets and routes frequently used by students.
The memorandum also called for dedicated women’s police assistance booths around major colleges and universities and the deployment of women’s safety response vehicles and PCR vans in strategically important student areas.
ABVP Delhi state secretary Sarthak Sharma said women’s safety should not be limited to action after an incident and called for preventive measures to identify vulnerable locations.
DUSU president Yash Dabas said the safety of female students should extend beyond college premises to commuting routes, hostel and PG areas and other places regularly visited by them.
He also called for a joint comprehensive security audit by Delhi Police and Delhi University and sought stronger arrangements such as Pink Police Booths, street lighting, CCTV surveillance and regular patrolling around the university.
