Chhatarpur (MP), Sep 26 A man, his wife and his mother were among five persons killed after the sports utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in collided with a truck in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district on Saturday evening, police said.
The accident, which also left one person seriously injured, took place near Chauka village, about 20 km from the district headquarters, when the victims were travelling from Bijawar to Bagauta for a funeral, they said.
The deceased were identified as Daulat Raikwar (40), his wife Beena (38), his mother Shyam Bai (60), Kaushalya Raikwar (50) and Sanjay (25), all residents of Bijawar, police said.
Investigation officer U S Tripathi from Matguwan police station said a Bolero collided head-on with a truck travelling from Chhatarpur towards Sagar.
All six occupants of the SUV were trapped inside the badly damaged vehicle. After being alerted, police reached the spot and pulled out the victims from the SUV with the help of locals.
While five of them died, one person, identified as Chhotu, suffered serious injuries. He was initially taken to the district hospital and later referred to Gwalior for advanced care, police said.
The impact was so severe that the SUV’s roof became entangled with the truck and was torn off, Bijawar Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Ajay Kumar Rithoriya said.
The truck involved in the accident was impounded, and its driver was taken into custody. An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the collision, the official added.
