Aizawl, Sep 26 An influential student organisation in Mizoram has called for stronger protection of the state’s boundaries, strict enforcement of the ILP system and safeguards for provisions governing marriage and inheritance of property, a leader said on Saturday.
The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), at its recent general assembly, adopted a set of resolutions urging the state government to take steps to protect the state’s “genuine boundaries”, its general secretary Lalhmingsanga Chhangte said.
He said the MZP also called for strict implementation of the Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property (Amendment) Act, 2026, and sought measures to prevent descendants of non-Mizo communities from claiming Scheduled Tribe benefits.
The amendment, passed by the state Assembly in February, seeks to ban polygamy and bigamy, remove the Mizo identity of women marrying non-Mizo men and enhance women’s property rights when separated from their husbands.
Chhangte said the MZP called for Inner Line Permit (ILP) checks at all entry points into Mizoram and decided to pursue measures to ensure that every person entering the state undergoes the required verification.
The ILP system regulates the entry of people from outside the state.
According to figures presented in the Assembly last month, nearly five lakh ILPs have been issued since 2024, with more than 2.15 lakh issued after the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line in September last year.
The MZP resolved that the government should formulate stringent laws against businesses operated by non-Mizos or outsiders using Mizo names as a front, and conduct necessary investigations to identify such practices, Chhangte said.
Another important resolution adopted by the students’ organisation was a call for a study into the possible impact of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) on Mizoram and its people.
