Jaipur, Sep 25 Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly Tikaram Jully on Friday targeted the BJP over its national president Nitin Nabin’s visit to the state, saying that visits by senior leaders would not help the ruling party reconnect with people.
“The BJP may call Nitin Nabin or even bring Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Rajasthan, but the connect it has lost with the people of the state cannot be restored merely through visits and speeches,” Jully said.
His remarks came on a day Nabin attended several programmes in Jaipur and interacted with party leaders, workers and youths.
Jully claimed that there was growing disappointment among people with the state government and the BJP.
Referring to the recent urban local body elections, he claimed that the difference in vote share between the BJP and Congress was less than one percentage point. Instead of respecting the mandate, Jully said, the BJP resorted to political manoeuvring and attempts to bring councillors to its side after the ward results.
“People gave their verdict through their votes. In a democracy, that verdict should be respected,” Jully said.
He also pointed to the large number of votes secured by Independent candidates in the civic polls and said the election results should not be viewed merely through the number of civic bodies won by political parties.
Jully said political parties needed to remain connected with people throughout their tenure rather than reaching out to them only during elections.
“The distance created in people’s minds cannot be bridged by visits of senior leaders, but only by respecting democratic norms and people’s trust,” he said.
