Chennai, Sep 25 The Tambaram City Police on Friday said no material had emerged so far to establish that an alleged incident of child sexual abuse took place inside a government school near Vandalur, contrary to claims circulating on social media.
Following reports alleging that a female student had been sexually assaulted within the premises of a government school in Kandigai village on September 24, an FIR was registered immediately, and a woman inspector, under the supervision of senior women police officers, launched an investigation, officials said.
“During the course of the investigation, all relevant evidence was promptly collected and carefully verified. CCTV footage available in and around the school premises was examined. The student was also subjected to a medical examination, and witnesses connected with the matter were examined in detail. Other available scientific and corroborative evidence was also carefully scrutinised,” the police said in a statement.
The police clarified that, based on the findings — including the student’s statement and the evidence collected — there was no material at this stage to establish that the alleged assault took place inside the school, though the investigation remained underway. The department also urged the public not to spread unverified claims, in the interest of the minor.
The incident triggered sharp reactions from opposition leaders.
Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin took to X to attack the ruling TVK government, alleging that officials were attempting to cover up the incident and divert attention because of ongoing by-election campaign activities in Maduranthakam.
The DMK leader urged the authorities to ensure justice and proper medical care for the child, while demanding stringent legal action against the culprits and enhanced security across all school premises.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also alleged that the government and the police were attempting to suppress the matter and intimidate media outlets into deleting reports, rather than thoroughly probing the allegations.
In a lengthy post on X, Palaniswami criticised the administration over the safety of girls in government-run institutions and demanded strict action against those responsible.
