New Delhi, Sep 24 Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists on Thursday protested outside the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor’s office over increasing incidents of crime against women on campuses, amid heightened concerns over student safety following the alleged rape of a minor at Aastha Kunj Park.
The protesters raised concerns over the safety of girl students and demanded stronger security arrangements on and around university campuses.
The protest comes a day after students of Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College for Women held a solidarity march demanding better security measures following the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl inside Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir.
The incident, which occurred around 2 km from LSR, has prompted safety concerns in areas used by students, particularly during evening hours.
LSR has since stepped up security around the college in coordination with Delhi Police. Patrolling in the vicinity has been enhanced and personnel at the Pink Booth near the college have been briefed on effective patrolling, removal of encroachments and action against unwanted elements.
A WhatsApp group comprising the college administration, Students’ Union and senior police personnel has also been created to facilitate timely reporting and action on incidents, the college said.
Work on street lighting has been initiated following a police audit, while speed breakers have been installed in the back lane of the college.
The Aastha Kunj incident has also brought renewed attention to safety arrangements in public spaces and areas surrounding educational institutions in the capital.
