North Lakhimpur (Assam), Sep 24 In a shocking incident, a newborn girl was allegedly killed and buried by her mother in Dhemaji district of Assam, police said on Thursday.
The parents of the child were arrested.
According to a senior police officer, the infant was allegedly killed three days ago soon after birth and buried in a pit dug behind the house at Moridhal Kathalguri village.
The incident came to light when villagers noticed the burial spot and exhumed the body. They also found a rope tied around the neck of the infant, he said.
“Our team reached the spot after being informed by villagers and started an investigation. Both parents have been arrested in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway,” the officer said.
He said that the reason for the murder is being probed, but neighbours claimed that the couple wanted a boy as they already have a daughter.
“So, probably that is why they killed the newborn girl,” the official said.
