Bhopal, Sep 23 Three cops were suspended on Wednesday in connection with the alleged assault on a lawyer at the Jahangirabad police station in Bhopal, officials said.
The action was taken against Rajan Singh Ahirwar, the in-charge of the police station, and constables Yash Lakhera and Ramswaroop, they said.
All three have been attached to the police lines (removed from active field duties), said an order issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Akhil Patel.
Advocate Rakesh Rawal (45) alleged that the police personnel misbehaved with him and assaulted him at the police station on Tuesday night.
The lawyer said he was passing through the Khatlapura temple road when he got into an argument with traffic and police personnel, who claimed that the road had been closed for Ganesh idol immersion processions.
Rawal said the cops took him to the Jahangirabad police station, where they allegedly abused him and hit him with batons, he alleged.
After learning about the incident, a large number of lawyers arrived at the police station and staged a protest demanding action against those involved. The protest continued until around 3 am.
Senior police officials also arrived at the scene and assured the lawyers of an impartial investigation and action against any cop found guilty.
A purported video of the incident released by the lawyers showed mud on Rawal’s clothes and injury marks on his legs.
Several lawyers also staged a demonstration at the Bhopal District Court on Wednesday morning and abstained from court proceedings, demanding action against cops.
Officials said three cops, including the police station in-charge, have been suspended and a probe is underway.
