Jashpur, Sep 24 The carcass of a male elephant was found near an agricultural field in Haldimunda-Dhodhiara village in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district on Thursday, officials said.
The forest department was alerted by villager Santosh Ram, who had gone to his field around 7:30 am, after which a team of veterinarians started post mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death, an official said.
“The elephant’s age was preliminarily estimated at 10 to 15 years. The cause of death will be established only after the post mortem and completion of the investigation,” said DFO Shashi Kumar.
The forest department asked villagers not to believe in or circulate unverified information or rumours about the incident. They must immediately inform authorities about any suspicious activity or information related to wildlife, the department added.
