Kolkata, Sep 23 Two college students were seriously injured after a youth allegedly attacked them with a knife following an argument at a shopping mall in New Town near here on Wednesday, police said.
The incident took place at the mall when a group of friends were having coffee and soft drinks.
“An argument broke out among them, following which one of the youths took out a knife from his bag and attacked one of his friends, injuring him in the neck and other parts of the body,” the police officer said.
Another friend who tried to intervene was also attacked, he said.
The accused was detained at the mall shortly after the incident.
“Prima facie, it appears that the incident followed an argument among the friends. We are questioning the accused and investigating the circumstances that led to the attack,” the officer said.
The two injured youth were taken to a nearby hospital with the help of local people.
Preliminary investigation suggests that a relationship-related dispute may have led to the argument, but police are also examining other possible reasons behind the attack, the officer said.
A knife allegedly used in the attack is also being examined as part of the investigation, he added.
