Lucknow, Sep 22 (PTI) Nursing students of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) who were protesting against the death of a fellow student allegedly due to dengue have called off their protests on Tuesday, a university official said.
Nursing students at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) protested here on Monday following the death of fellow student Divyanshi Yadav, allegedly due to dengue.
KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh said, “The students have called off their protests.” The spokesperson on Monday had said, “A five-member committee has been formed. The committee members are Chief Medical Superintendent Dr BK Ojha; Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Prof Amita Pandey; Vice Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Prof Smriti Agarwal; Chief Proctor Prof RAS Kushwaha; and Principal of the College of Nursing Suchana Roy Bhowmik.”
Later, in a statement, the university said, “Today, with the objective of resolving the issue concerning the nursing students, the KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand conveyed a message to the students through Prof Anjoo Agarwal; Dr KK Singh, Dean, Paramedical Sciences and Pradeep Gangwar, President, Nursing Association, KGMU.”
The above representatives visited the dharna site, addressed the students, and read out the VC’s letter, wherein the students were invited for a discussion and dialogue to address their concerns. Subsequently, at 3 pm, a meeting was held in the Board Room under the VC’s chairmanship.
Approximately 20 student representatives, who attended the meeting, were given an opportunity to present their difficulties, concerns, and demands, the statement said.
“The VC heard them patiently, noted their concerns, and assured the students that their demands would be duly considered and addressed,” it said.
She further informed them that she would meet the same student representatives again by the weekend — either Friday or Saturday, for further discussion and review of the issues. She also appealed to the students to conclude their dharna and resume their academic activities, with classes commencing from 8 am Wednesday morning.
All the student representatives present in the meeting agreed to the above appeal and said that they would communicate the outcome of the meeting and the VC’s appeal to the students present at the dharna site.
“Subsequently, Dr KK Singh and Pradeep Gangwar communicated the outcome of the meeting to the students at the dharna site, following which the students called off their agitation at 5 pm today (Tuesday),” the statement said.
