Kolkata, Sep 24 Parts of West Bengal on Thursday received heavy rainfall under the influence of an active southwest monsoon and a deep depression that made landfall in Andhra Pradesh, IMD said.
Kansabati Dam in Bankura district received 100 mm of rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Thursday, the highest in the state.
Other places that received significant rainfall were Medinipur (94 mm), Panagarh (87 mm), Bankura (50 mm), Contai (55 mm) and Darjeeling (55 mm), the weather office said.
State capital Kolkata, which recorded 80 mm of rainfall during the period, will receive a few spells of precipitation till Friday, it said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast more heavy rain till Saturday, raising apprehensions of landslides in the hills and inundation of low-lying areas in the plains.
The IMD said the deep depression currently over south Odisha will move north-northwestward as it gradually weakens.
The south Bengal districts of Jhargram and Bankura will receive very heavy rain, while most other places in the region will receive heavy precipitation till Friday, the weather office said.
The sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar will receive very heavy rain, while other places in the region will get heavy rain until Saturday, it said.
Warning of squally winds reaching 50 kmph and rough seas in the northern Bay of Bengal and along the West Bengal coast, the IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea till Friday.
