Kochi, Sep 26 Activists of the DYFI, the youth wing of the opposition CPI(M), on Saturday marched to the Government Taluk Hospital at Paravur, in Chief Minister V D Satheesan’s constituency, protesting allegations that the body of a woman from Paruvathuruth had decayed after being kept in a faulty mortuary freezer.
A large number of protesters marched to the hospital carrying banners and raising slogans against the Congress-led UDF government, alleging negligence by the health department.
The protesters alleged that despite the hospital being a major healthcare facility in the CM’s constituency, adequate steps had not been taken to improve its mortuary facilities.
The protest was triggered by a recent complaint from the woman’s family, who alleged that her body had been found in a decayed condition after being kept in a malfunctioning freezer.
DYFI state secretary M Vijin, who led the march, alleged that the incident amounted to a serious lapse and showed disrespect towards the dead.
“Such an incident should never happen in a government hospital. Here, it happened at a taluk hospital in the CM’s own constituency,” he said, adding that the relatives could not even pay their last respects to the deceased as her body had decayed.
