Lucknow, Sep 25 Mohammad Jasmir Ansari, a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP), has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, an official said on Friday.
Dr Rajesh Singh, Principal Secretary of the Legislative Council, issued a notification on Friday regarding his appointment. The notification said Legislative Council chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh has designated Ansari as the Leader of the Opposition.
Ansari, elected to the Legislative Council in July 2022, hails from Sitapur district and is considered a close associate of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.
Until now, SP’s Lal Bihari Yadav has served as Leader of the Opposition in the Council.
Yadav, a native of Azamgarh district, is set to complete his term in the first week of December 2026.
Currently, the SP has only 10 members in the 100-member Legislative Council. The SP is the principal opposition party in Uttar Pradesh.
