Imphal, Sep 25 Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Friday said frequent bandhs and blockades in the state have resulted in a daily loss of around Rs 25-30 crore in tax revenue to the government.
Speaking at a Seva Sankalp Abhiyan event at the Indian National Army Martyr’s Memorial Complex Hall in Bishnupur district, Singh said the state government would introduce a special financial assistance scheme for women street vendors before the Ningol Chakouba festival in November to help them meet their families’ daily needs.
He said those who have not yet registered for the scheme may do so through their respective legislators.
Singh said the month-long Seva Sankalp Abhiyan was being observed across the country to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years of public service and carry forward the spirit of public service and good governance.
The chief minister said the unprecedented crisis in Manipur in 2023 had a severe impact on the state’s economy, including a huge loss in revenue.
“Frequent bandhs and blockades called in the state have resulted in a loss of around Rs 25 to Rs 30 crore per day in tax revenue to the state government,” he said.
Singh stressed that differences could always be resolved through dialogue and appealed to people not to resort to agitations that disrupt normal day-to-day activities.
He also said those who advocate protecting Manipur but are unwilling to visit the hills should not be followed merely on the basis of their words, and encouraged such people to visit the hills.
The chief minister said the crisis had severely affected families dependent on daily wages for their livelihood.
Following discussions during the recently concluded eighth session of the assembly, the state government has decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each to around 3,00,050 families, he said.
The necessary budgetary provision has been earmarked for implementing the assistance, Singh added.
