New Delhi, Sep 25 Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Friday asked NDMC employees to maintain the cleanliness and civic standards achieved during the BRICS summit throughout the year, saying such efforts should not be restricted to major events.
Addressing New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) employees at the civic body’s convention centre, Sandhu praised the council’s work during the summit and said the standards delivered during the international event should become the norm on other days as well.
“We recently saw the BRICS summit; everyone appreciated it. I only gave them credit for that — what you can deliver during BRICS, you should deliver on other days as well in Delhi,” he told PTI Videos.
He said clean roads and parks should remain a priority and sought the employees’ cooperation in strengthening security in the NDMC area, referring to the Delhi Police’s efforts and the recently formed Pink Force.
“Delhi Police is focusing on this, and our Pink Squad has also been formed now. Their participation in that is important as well,” Sandhu said.
According to an official statement, the lieutenant governor also asked employees to raise their concerns with their seniors and authorities, saying efforts would be made to address their issues.
During the interaction, employees raised concerns regarding medical facilities, women’s safety at workplaces and nearby areas, mechanisation of sweeping, possibility of job loss due to greater use of technology, recreational facilities and canteens, and accommodation.
Sandhu also stressed the need to involve schoolchildren in cleanliness campaigns, saying their participation could influence their families. “Children’s participation is a major focus area. When children say something to their parents, parents always remember it,” he said.
He suggested that the NDMC organise sports tournaments for students and asked its chairman to focus on the initiative, noting that the civic body’s schools were performing well academically.
While outlining a four-pillar roadmap for a “world-class Delhi”, Sandhu identified safer streets for women and children through better lighting and Pink Force deployment, AI-enabled civic services, zero-waste neighbourhoods and greater public participation as key areas.
“New Delhi is not merely the administrative centre of the country; it is the face and first impression of India for visitors from across the world. The cleanliness, greenery, upkeep and overall appearance of the National Capital therefore carry immense significance,” he said.
Sandhu said frontline workers, including sanitation workers, gardeners, engineers and electrical and maintenance staff, played a key role in maintaining the city’s civic infrastructure, the statement read.
Sandhu later visited Anupam Colony in Chanakyapuri, where he interacted with residents and members of the Resident Welfare Association over the locality’s waste-management practices, including source segregation and on-site composting.
He said such neighbourhood-level initiatives could help reduce waste sent to landfills and called for similar models to be adopted in other parts of Delhi.
“By taking waste management to the community level — through source segregation, composting and decentralised waste processing — we can reduce waste generation, ease the pressure on landfills and build a cleaner and more sustainable Delhi,” he said.
According to the statement, the lieutenant governor also inaugurated a dental health awareness and preventive oral health camp at the NDMC Dental Care Clinic on Dharam Marg, where he interacted with dental experts and visited stalls on oral hygiene, geriatric care, tobacco and cancer awareness, child oral health and 3D dental care.
