New Delhi, Sep 25 The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Friday condemned the arrest of their leaders and activists during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that police used force against demonstrators.
In a statement, the organisations said Rajya Sabha MPs A A Rahim and Sivadasan, SFI All India President Adarsh M Saji and several Delhi office-bearers of the student organisation were arrested during the demonstration.
The SFI said Delhi unit secretary Sooraj Elamon, joint secretary Mehina Fathima, vice presidents Simran, Anil Sethumadhavan and Sagar Singal, and secretariat member Sakhi were among those detained.
The organisations alleged that police used “indiscriminate force” against protesters.
The protest was held demanding the resignation of Kumar and raising concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission.
The development comes amid a wider political row over a report on objections reportedly raised over several decisions related to electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
SFI and DYFI demanded the immediate release of those arrested and action against police personnel allegedly responsible for using force against protesters.
The organisations also said they would continue to raise demands for accountability in the functioning of the poll panel.
