Meerut (UP), Sep 25 Meerut MP Arun Govil on Friday inaugurated a bakery unit built for Rs 20.21 lakh at the District Jail here to promote skill development among inmates.
According to the jail administration, funds amounting to Rs 20.21 lakh were provided from the MPLAD fund to procure the machinery for setting up the bakery unit.
On this occasion, District Magistrate VK Singh and Senior Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma welcomed Govil.
Jailors Avnish Yadav and Manish Kumar, along with representatives from the Virina Foundation, were present at the event.
Sharma said that the objective of the bakery unit is skill development and employment-oriented training for the inmates lodged in the prison. In addition to learning how to prepare bakery products, the inmates will also receive practical training in marketing these products.
The officials said that this initiative would help inmates develop their skills and explore future opportunities for employment or self-employment. It would also facilitate their rehabilitation and reintegration into the mainstream of society.
Such creative and skill-based activities within the prison help steer inmates in a positive direction, they said.
