Shillong, Sep 25 The Centre’s decision to keep banks open this Sunday (September 27) has drawn strong opposition in Meghalaya, with several social organisations warning of protests across the state if banks conduct regular operations on the day.
The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), which has opposed the decision, said Sunday is a day of worship, family and community life in the predominantly Christian state.
Issuing a “final notice” to banks, CoMSO general secretary Balkarin Ch Marak said the organisation would be compelled to mobilise people and its constituent organisations against banks that open for regular operations on Sunday.
“The people of the state will not accept its disregard in the name of administrative convenience,” Marak said.
CoMSO urged banks to reconsider the decision immediately and respect what it described as the distinct religious and social character of Meghalaya.
The Centre has directed banks to remain open on September 27 ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30.
Christians account for 74.59 per cent of the state’s population, according to the 2011 Census.
