Sonbhadra (UP), Sep 24 Police have seized 6.25 quintal of illegal cannabis valued at around Rs 3.10 crore from a truck, arresting two alleged members of an inter-state drug trafficking gang in Sonbhadra district, an official said on Thursday.
The police also recovered Rs 10,000 in cash, two mobile phones and the vehicle allegedly used for transporting the contraband, Superintendent of Police Abhishek Verma said.
The arrested accused were identified as Dilip Kumar Dehuri, 36, and Santosh Kumar Sahu, 42, both residents of Odisha, he said.
According to the SP, Shahganj police were conducting night patrols and checking suspicious persons when a container truck driver, on seeing the police near the Gauri Shankar temple, stopped the vehicle and tried to flee.
A police team, which was following the truck, reached the spot and apprehended the driver and another person who was allegedly accompanying him, Verma said.
During a search of the vehicle, police found that a separate compartment had been fabricated inside the truck by welding iron sheets, and 6.25 quintal ganja worth about Rs 3.1 crore was concealed in it, the SP said.
During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that the consignment was to be delivered to a person based in Mirzapur district, he said.
A detailed probe is on in the matter. police said.
