Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Sep 24 Two siblings drowned in a small pond near their agricultural field in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place at Bagchatta village within Anandpur police station on Wednesday evening, they said.
Anandpur police station officer-in-charge Prince Jha told reporters that the deceased, Gulshan Tuddu (7) and his three-year-old sister Angel, had returned home from their school, DAV Public School, late on Wednesday afternoon.
“According to the statement given by their father Augustine Tuddu, the children used to play in the small pond called ‘Dobha’ in local parlance. When their father returned in the evening from work and could not find the kids, the family members started searching for them,” Jha said.
The family members eventually found the bodies in the pond, he said.
“It is likely that Angel fell into the pond first; her brother, Gulshan, presumably entered the water in an attempt to save her, resulting in both of them drowning,” Jha said.
The family refused post-mortem, and the bodies were handed over to them for the last rites, he said.
