New Delhi, Sep 24 The Delhi unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday staged a protest outside the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor’s office over recent incidents concerning the safety of women and female students in the national capital and around the university.
The student organisation demanded that the Delhi Police, Delhi University administration and Delhi government take immediate measures to strengthen security arrangements for female students.
ABVP highlighted that several incidents concerning women’s safety had recently come to light, including “a rape incident near the back gate of Lady Shri Ram College, alleged molestation of female students in Vijay Nagar and a complaint by a JNU student concerning outsiders”.
The organisation demanded immediate arrest of those accused in such cases and their trial in fast-track courts, besides strict action against those found guilty.
“Female students deserve a fear-free environment within the university campus and its vicinity,” the statement quoted ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma.
He called for coordination between the Delhi Police, university administration and Delhi government to strengthen security arrangements.
The organisation demanded a security audit of sensitive areas around the university, increased police patrolling, adequate lighting and CCTV surveillance, and an effective mechanism for prompt redressal of complaints by female students.
It also sought immediate repair of faulty streetlights and CCTV cameras in areas frequented by students.
DUSU President Yash Dabas asserted that security arrangements should not be limited to the main gates of the university and called for adequate measures along routes used by female students, back gates, surrounding roads and areas housing hostels and paying-guest accommodations.
“In light of recent incidents, the Delhi University administration and the Delhi Police should conduct a comprehensive review of security arrangements and take immediate, necessary steps,” Dabas said.
