Noida, Sep 23 A 54-year-old Delhi-NCR woman’s long-standing acidity problem led to the discovery of a tumour in her food pipe after she developed difficulty swallowing solid food, doctors treating her said.
The 1.5 cm growth was removed and her persistent acid reflux treated in a single minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, in what the treating team claimed as the first such case reported in Noida.

The patient, Sandhya, a homemaker, had a history of chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Despite treatment, her symptoms persisted, and three months before the procedure she developed difficulty swallowing solid foods, prompting further evaluation, according to a statement issued on Tuesday.
An upper GI endoscopy found the growth at the junction of the mid-to-lower esophagus, along with mild GERD and laxity of the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve that prevents acid reflux. It was later confirmed benign after removal with clear margins, it added.
“What made this case particularly significant was the presence of two separate problems requiring treatment — a 1.5 cm benign tumour in the esophagus and refractory GERD associated with lower esophageal sphincter laxity,” said Dr Arun Iyer, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology at Kailash Hospital and Neuro Institute Sector 71.
“After evaluating the lesion and discussing both surgical and endoscopic options with the patient and her family, we were able to use a minimally invasive endoscopic approach to completely remove the tumour and address the reflux during the same sitting,” he said.
Iyer said the 50-minute procedure was performed under general anaesthesia, with the tumour removed in one piece using Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection and a TT knife, and Anti-Reflux Mucosectomy (ARMA) performed to treat the reflux and sphincter laxity, with no reported complications.
The patient resumed a full diet within 24 hours and was discharged the next day. At one-month follow-up, she was asymptomatic with no residual tumour or evidence of GERD, he added.
