Itanagar, Sept 25 The opposition Congress in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday staged a demonstration in Itanagar as part of the party’s nationwide agitation, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The state Congress demanded a halt to the SIR exercise, an independent inquiry into decisions relating to electoral rolls and that upcoming elections be put on hold until the inquiry is completed.
The party also sought criminal proceedings against Kumar and that all files related to the SIR exercise be placed in the custody of the Supreme Court.
The demonstration was held near the Nirvachan Bhawan in the state capital, with Congress workers raising slogans against the Election Commission.
The protest was held peacefully with no untoward incident reported, officials said.
