New Delhi, Sep 23 During a special week-long drive to curb road accidents and improve lane discipline, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued 915 challans for wrong-side driving in the New Delhi Range and registered FIRs, officials said on Wednesday.
The drive was conducted at vulnerable locations, including intersections, median openings, service roads and market areas, where motorists often take shortcuts by driving on the wrong side, they said.
The New Delhi Range covers the New Delhi and South West districts, including Tughlaq Road, Chanakyapuri, Parliament House, Barakhamba Road, Parliament Street and Tilak Marg circles, as well as Delhi Cantt, IGI Airport, Kapashera, Vasant Vihar and Safdarjung circles.
The traffic police said wrong-side driving is a major traffic violation that can lead to head-on collisions and poses a risk to motorists, pedestrians and others.
This year, the New Delhi Range issued 33,005 challans for wrong-side driving and registered 417 FIRs under relevant provisions of law, the department said.
In a separate enforcement exercise, the Southern Range of the traffic police, along with local police, conducted anti-encroachment drives at various locations on September 19 and 20 to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic and pedestrians.
During the two-day drive, police issued 829 challans against improperly parked vehicles, including 266 e-challans and 563 violations. Officials removed over 98 roadside vendors, or rehri-patri operators, and towed eight vehicles.
