Meerut (UP), Sep 23 Lawyers here abstained from judicial work on Wednesday and held a demonstration demanding the establishment of a bench of the Allahabad High Court in western Uttar Pradesh.
The lawyers took out a procession on the court premises and raised slogans in support of their demand.
Meerut Bar Association president and chairman of the Western Uttar Pradesh High Court Bench Establishment Central Struggle Committee Anuj Sharma said the decision to abstain from judicial work was taken after a meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Meerut on Monday.
Sharma claimed that lawyers in 22 districts of western Uttar Pradesh abstained from judicial work on Wednesday and protests were held at several places.
However, the Meerut District Bar Association did not support the call to abstain from judicial work.
Its president Ravindra Kumar Singh said lawyers affiliated with the district bar association continued their work as usual.
Lawyers in western Uttar Pradesh have been campaigning for a separate High Court bench in the region for several years.
