Jaipur, Sep 22 An elderly patient suffering from a rare cardiac disorder has been treated in Jaipur using a catheter-based procedure without open-heart surgery, doctors said on Tuesday.
The patient was suffering from tricuspid valve Barlow’s disease, which had caused severe tricuspid regurgitation, or leakage of blood backwards through the valve with each heartbeat.
The procedure was performed recently at Rajasthan hospital by a team led by interventional structural cardiologist Dr Ravinder Singh Rao, along with Dr Kailash Chandra and Dr Prashant Varshney.
Doctors said the patient had been experiencing symptoms for around six months.
In Barlow’s disease, valve tissue becomes enlarged and floppy, preventing the valve from closing properly. Severe tricuspid regurgitation can lead to swelling in the legs and abdomen, fatigue and fluid accumulation, among other problems.
Doctors used a dedicated tricuspid Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) device for the procedure, according to a release.
“The severity of the leakage and the valve structure required careful assessment and precise treatment. Catheter-based approaches can help treat selected patients with complex valve disease who may otherwise have limited treatment options,” Rao said.
The doctors said the procedure reduced the valve leakage by more than 90 per cent. The patient spent a day in intensive care and was mobilised the following day.
