Malappuram (Keralam), Sep 23 Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday objected to the extensive security cover during her visit to the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and said she would stop sharing her travel plans with security personnel if the arrangements continued.
Vadra asked the security personnel to keep their distance, saying she would otherwise stop informing them of her travel plans.
“Please tell your men to stand back,” she told the officers.
During the day, the Congress MP visited various places in her constituency, including the home of Sajitha, one of the six persons who died in the recent flash flood in the district.
She asked Sajitha’s family about their needs and assured them that she would intervene sympathetically.
Vadra told reporters that she would help the family in addition to the financial assistance of Rs 8 lakh they would receive from the state government.
She interacted with workers under the rural employment guarantee scheme, autorickshaw drivers and tribals from the Vaniyampuzha hamlet who were displaced in the 2019 floods.
Regarding the tribals displaced from their hamlet in Vaniyampuzha, Vadra said their rehabilitation was a priority.
She said the construction of houses for those who had received land should be expedited.
On the man-animal conflict in the region, the Congress MP said it was a complicated issue for which there were no immediate solutions.
She said several factors were responsible for the conflict and that a meeting would be held this week to discuss the issue.
Vadra said experts would participate in the meeting to discuss ways to address the problem.
During her meeting with VB-G RAM G workers, they told the MP that work-related requirements, such as uploading photographs twice a day on the portal, amounted to harassment and were causing them to lose workdays.
After hearing their concerns, Vadra said the new scheme was undermining the very idea of the Employment Guarantee Act and alleged that the central government was trying to sabotage the initiative.
She assured the workers that their problems would be brought to the attention of the central government and that pressure would be put on it to find a solution.
The autorickshaw drivers raised their concerns with the MP, saying high fuel prices and the cost of spare parts were causing them difficulties.
They demanded, among other measures, that fuel be subsidised as an urgent measure, according to a statement issued by the Congress party.
