New Delhi, Sep 23 Delhi Lt Governor TS Sandhu on Wednesday approved construction a 5.5-km-long elevated corridor on the Maa Anandmayee Marg, paving the way for the project aimed at decongesting the key arterial road in south Delhi.
Sandhu who headed a meeting of Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) also approved multi-modal integration (MMI) plans for six additional metro stations for improving access to last-mile connectivity.
UTTIPEC, under the Delhi Development Authourity (DDA), is the highest governing body for approval of infrastructure projects.
“The projects approved during the meeting will help improve connectivity to metro stations, make last-mile access more convenient and safer for pedestrians and ease congestion at some of Delhi’s key traffic points,” a DDA official said.
The roadways are expected to facilitate smoother movement for commuters, while the MMI plans will strengthen the connection between public transport and surrounding areas. Together, these measures will contribute to more efficient, safer and better-connected commute for people across Delhi, the official said.
“The flyover on Maa Anandmayee Marg will bypass around 12 intersections on the road and is aimed at easing traffic congestion caused by the mix of traffic generated from the Okhla Phase I and II industrial areas,” the DDA officer said.
A proposed underpass and roundabout at the Crowne Plaza intersection will further help in decongesting vehicular traffic on Okhla Estate Marg.
“With lower traffic volumes at ground level, the project will also facilitate better provisions for pedestrian and non-motorised transport infrastructure along Maa Anandmayee Marg,” he added.
The MMI plans approved during the meeting covered six metro station — GTB Nagar on the Yellow Line, Sarita Vihar on the Violet Line, Akshardham on the Blue Line, Rohini West/Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital on the Red Line, Malviya Nagar on the Yellow Line and Shastri Park on the Red Line.
The MMI plans cover an influence zone of approximately 300 metres around a Mass Rapid Transit System station. As per the plan, areas around metro stations will be revamped for construction of dedicated lanes for auto-rickshaw, pedestrians and vehicle pick-and-drop facilities.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had prepared MMI plans for 31 metro stations across Phase I and II metro corridors in Delhi. With the approval of these six plans, all 31 MMI plans have now been approved by UTTIPEC, officials said.
The UTTIPEC also approved a project aimed at decongesting Mukarba Chowk in North West Delhi. “The project comprises widening of the existing Road Over Bridge (ROB) on Outer Ring Road from six lanes to 10 lanes and construction of another four-lane ROB connecting Jahangirpuri Industrial Area with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar over the Delhi-Sonipat Rail line,” they added.
The widening of the existing ROB is aimed at easing congestion for commuters travelling on Outer Ring Road between Mukarba Chowk and Madhuban Chowk.
