Amaravati, Sep 23 The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday said the deep depression over west-central and adjoining Bay of Bengal moved westwards and lay centred over the same region, about 150 km off Vizag, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of Andhra Pradesh.
The Met Department forecast light thunderstorms and light rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in parts of Coastal Andhra and one or two places in Kurnool and Nandyal districts.
“The deep depression over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal moved westwards with a speed of 12 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 5:30 am today over the same region,” said the Met Department in an official press release.
By Wednesday morning, the weather system lay 150 km east – northeast of Visakhapatnam.
It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross North Andhra Pradesh – South Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam as a deep depression by Wednesday night, said the Met Department.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) managing director Prakhar Jain said widespread rains are expected under the influence of the deep depression on Wednesday and Thursday.
According to Jain, heavy rains are expected in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari and Eluru districts.
Likewise, he said moderate rainfall is expected in Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla and Palnadu districts, along with light to moderate showers in Rayalaseema districts.
He advised people in low lying areas to be cautious of sudden floods and directed fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea for fishing.
