Kolkata, Sep 22 The Calcutta High Court will on Wednesday hear a petition by ISF leader and MLA Naushad Siddiqui challenging the Election Commission of India’s decision to replace the ‘envelope’ symbol, on which the party fought the April assembly elections in West Bengal, with the ‘almirah’ symbol.
His lawyer Shamim Ahmed mentioned the matter before Justice Krishna Rao’s court on Tuesday, seeking an urgent hearing.
The Indian Secular Front’s (ISF) petition challenging the ECI’s decision to replace the ‘envelope’ symbol with the ‘almirah’ symbol will be taken up for hearing on Wednesday by Justice Rao as per the published serial list of the high court.
By-elections to Nandigram and Rejinagar seats in West Bengal are scheduled to be held on October 6 and the campaign will end on October 4.
The ISF has put up its candidate for the byelection to the Nandigram constituency.
Siddiqui, the ISF MLA from Bhangar constituency, who is also the leader of the party, filed the petition before the high court, claiming “injustice” by the poll body.
The ISF fought the 2026 assembly polls in West Bengal with the ‘Envelope’ symbol.
The ECI reassigned the Indian Secular Front (ISF), led by Siddiqui, from the ‘envelope’ symbol to the ‘almirah’ symbol.
The poll body allotted the ‘envelope’ symbol to the Ritabrata Banerjee-led Democratic Trinamool Congress over a tussle between two factions of the Trinamool Congress, with the other faction led by Mamata Banerjee getting the symbol featuring a football player.
The ECI on September 17 temporarily froze the Trinamool Congress (TMC) name and its “Flowers and Grass” election symbol following a bitter internal leadership dispute between the two factions.
