Kolkata, Sep 22 (PTI) A court in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Tuesday granted bail to two SFI supporters arrested in connection with a clash at Bhangar College a day ago.
RSS-affiliated ABVP supporters held a protest outside the Baruipur court complex during the production of the two arrested SFI activists.
Supporters of the Left-backed Students’ Federation of India and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed at Bhangar College on Monday after SFI activists protested against the presence of BJP leader Sayantan Basu, who has been appointed as chairman of the college’s governing body, on the institute premises.
The police arrested the two SFI activists in connection with the clash and produced them before the Baruipur district court.
On a prayer by their lawyer, the judge granted bail to the two youths, arrested on the charge of attempting to outrage the modesty of women.
They were granted bail on a bond of Rs 1,000 each.
Sayan Banerjee, the lawyer who represented the arrested SFI supporters, alleged that he was subjected to egg-pelting and slogans outside the court complex and was stuck there for two hours because of the protests by ABVP activists.
SFI state committee member Subhajit Sarkar alleged that the police were “brutally torturing” Left and democratic forces in Bengal while shielding the BJP and RSS camps.
ABVP state leader Shubhbarata Adhikari accused SFI and ISF activists of assaulting “patriotic” forces on the college campus and pursuing their own agenda.
The ABVP on Tuesday alleged that several of its workers, including its South 24 Parganas division convenor Sayan Mondal, were attacked by supporters of the SFI and ISF at Bhangar College a day ago and demanded a probe into the incident.
ABVP state secretary Nilkantha Bhattacharya said, “The attack targeting our workers is extremely concerning. Political violence against members of a student organisation is not compatible with a democratic campus environment.”
