New Delhi, Sep 15: India’s retail inflation rose to 4.82% in August 2026, up from 4.45% in July. This is the highest level in eight months and the third month in a row that inflation has stayed above the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% target. Rural inflation increased to 5.23%, while urban inflation stood at 4.31%.
The main reason for the rise was higher food prices. Food inflation increased to 5.95% in August. Prices of several essential items also rose sharply. Onion prices increased by 48.27%, garlic by 43.60% and ginger by 73.82%.
Andhra Pradesh is among the states facing the highest inflation. The state recorded 5.53% retail inflation, placing it among the top five major states.

The rise in food prices is putting a heavy burden on ordinary families in Andhra Pradesh. Prices of vegetables, pulses, cooking oil, rice, other food grains and milk are increasing, while household incomes are not rising at the same pace.
As a result, families are being forced to spend more on basic needs, leaving less money for savings and other expenses. For many households, this could also lead to greater dependence on loans and increasing financial stress.
