Repeated Cabinet absences fuel speculation over unease within Andhra Pradesh’s ruling coalition
Vijayawada, Aug 8: Is Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan unhappy with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu? Or are his repeated absences from Cabinet meetings a deliberate political signal that all may not be well within the ruling coalition?
These questions are beginning to gain traction in Andhra Pradesh’s political circles after Pawan Kalyan stayed away from yet another Cabinet meeting chaired by Chandrababu Naidu at the State Secretariat. This was the third consecutive Cabinet meeting that the Deputy Chief Minister reportedly skipped.
What makes the development particularly intriguing is that Pawan Kalyan has not exactly been away from official work. Even as he remains absent from Cabinet meetings chaired by the Chief Minister, he has continued to hold meetings and reviews concerning departments under his charge. Photographs and details of such meetings have also been shared with the media.
That contrast is now becoming the talking point.
A Deputy Chief Minister is among the most important members of any Cabinet. Repeated absence from Cabinet meetings would ordinarily attract little political attention if there were compelling reasons such as health concerns, unavoidable official engagements or other matters of exceptional importance. But when the absence becomes a pattern, while the Deputy Chief Minister continues with other official engagements, questions are inevitable.
The latest absence is particularly significant because it is not an isolated instance. Pawan Kalyan had also stayed away from the previous two Cabinet meetings. There have also been occasions in the past when he reportedly left Cabinet meetings midway. Over time, he has appeared less frequently at some of the government reviews and Cabinet deliberations chaired by Chandrababu Naidu.
Yet, Pawan Kalyan recently participated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s programme, adding another layer to the political speculation. If he can participate in other important political and official programmes while repeatedly staying away from meetings chaired by the Chief Minister, political observers are bound to ask whether there is more to these absences than scheduling difficulties.
Is Pawan merely busy, or is he making a point?
That is the question of doing the rounds.
Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena is a crucial constituent of the coalition government, and his political support was important to the alliance’s electoral success. His position as Deputy Chief Minister also makes his relationship with Chandrababu Naidu particularly significant to the stability and political optics of the coalition.
Against this backdrop, three consecutive Cabinet absences cannot easily escape scrutiny.
Is Pawan Kalyan increasingly dissatisfied with the way the coalition government is functioning? Does he believe Jana Sena is not receiving the political or administrative space it expected? Or is he consciously maintaining a distance from Chandrababu-led meetings to send a subtle message to the TDP leadership?
