New Delhi, Sep 12: BRICS nations on Saturday unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration on the first day of the BRICS Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the declaration provides a clear roadmap for collective action and stressed the need to convert commitments into tangible outcomes.
Modi called for urgent reforms in global institutions, saying the changing world cannot be governed by outdated structures. He particularly stressed greater representation for the Global South in global decision-making and future technology governance.
India also proposed a BRICS Continuity and Implementation Mechanism to ensure follow-up on decisions despite the annual change in chairmanship. A Seafarers Emergency Support Network was also proposed to provide assistance to seafarers during emergencies.
Highlighting BRICS’ 20th anniversary, Modi said the grouping has established a distinct identity on the global stage. India’s chairship focused on Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability, with more than 350 meetings held across nearly 30 cities.
Calling for a stronger voice for developing nations, Modi proposed 10 global governance reform measures to be developed into a BRICS reform roadmap by the next summit.
He also urged time-bound reform of the UN Security Council and said voting rights and leadership positions in international financial institutions must reflect today’s economic realities.
The leaders also released two commemorative postage stamps marking 20 years of BRICS.
