Chandigarh, Sep 22 Chandigarh has lost nearly 2 lakh voters between June 1, 2024, when the last Lok Sabha elections were held, and September 22, 2026, when the final electoral roll was published after a Special Intensive Revision in the Union Territory, Congress MP Manish Tewari said on Tuesday.
He asked if they were ghost voters, or poor people who were simply disenfranchised due to lack of necessary documentation.
In a post on X, the Chandigarh MP and former Union minister said, “The final electoral roll of the Union Territory of Chandigarh was published today after the SIR — Special Intensive Revision. Between June 1st 2024 and September 22nd 2026, Chandigarh has lost 1,99,596 electors; that is, 30.26% of the electorate.”
Since no state or UT is gaining electors, who were these 1,99,596 electors, Tewari asked.
“Were they duplicate voters, then (Election Commission) should tell us where they are now enrolled. Were they ghost voters, then (Election Commission) should publish their names. Or are they people — poor people who simply have been disenfranchised because they never had the requisite documentation?” he asked in the post.
The Chandigarh MP said the truth will be known only when the names and addresses of these “deleted voters” are made available separately, now that the final electoral roll is published.
Over 4.60 lakh electors are registered in the final electoral roll of the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency published on Tuesday. These comprise 2,34,516 males, 2,25,671 females and 22 transgender electors.
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was undertaken in Chandigarh from June 5, 2026. It was among the 16 states and three Union Territories included in the third phase of the SIR exercise.
