Babu’s Crackdown on Youth

Naidu govt’s brutal suppression of Young Voices in AP

The Chandrababu Naidu-led coalition government is facing growing criticism over what is being described as systematic harassment and suppression of youth across Andhra Pradesh. Critics allege that the Government is unable to tolerate questions, dissent, or democratic opposition, and is increasingly resorting to false cases, illegal arrests, intimidation, and police pressure to silence young voices — particularly those associated with the opposition.

According to allegations raised by YSRCP leaders and youth activists, young people who question the Government on social media, expose corruption, or protest against unfulfilled promises are being deliberately targeted. Cases are reportedly being filed for social media posts, protests, and criticism of Government policies. There are also allegations that harsh legal provisions are being invoked to damage the careers and futures of young individuals associated with opposition politics.

The controversy intensified following the incident involving Balu, the YSRCP Youth Wing City President from Kurnool. Balu, a physiotherapist by profession, allegedly faced continuous harassment from police officials acting under political pressure. According to the allegations, false cases had earlier been filed against him, including excise-related accusations during the 2024 elections, where he was allegedly portrayed as involved in illegal liquor activities. YSRCP claims that despite the absence of any fresh complaint, police personnel again visited his residence, allegedly intimidated his family members, and subjected him to severe mental harassment. Unable to bear the pressure and humiliation, Balu reportedly attempted suicide.

The issue has triggered outrage among youth groups and opposition supporters across the State, who accuse the Government of weaponising the police system against politically active youth. YSRCP alleged that several young people have already been jailed in social media-related cases merely for expressing opinions on governance failures, corruption, unemployment, or anti-people decisions. The party claims that youths are being portrayed as “organised criminals” through exaggerated FIRs and false cases designed to destroy their careers, block employment opportunities, prevent participation in competitive examinations, and create long-term social and financial damage.

The criticism also focuses on what the opposition calls the betrayal of promises made to youth before the elections. Chandrababu Naidu and coalition leaders had promised 20 lakh jobs, ₹3,000 monthly unemployment allowance, annual Mega DSC recruitments, and enhanced salaries for volunteers. According to critics, many of these promises remain unfulfilled even after two years in power. Instead of addressing unemployment and youth distress, the Government is accused of targeting those who question these failures.

YSRCP further alleged that Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a dangerous erosion of democratic freedoms, where questioning the Government itself is being treated as a crime. The party questioned whether police officials are functioning according to constitutional law and police manuals — or under what it described as “Red Book governance.” The opposition warned that if police excesses and political misuse of institutions continue, strong legal, political, and public resistance movements would intensify across the State.
