Amaravati: Parvathi, the mother of Sugali Preethi, a young girl who was brutally raped and murdered nine years ago, has launched a scathing attack on Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief Pawan Kalyan. Speaking at the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) central office in Tadepalli, an emotional Parvathi accused Kalyan of using her daughter’s tragic death as a political stepping stone to gain power, only to completely abandon the cause once he assumed office.
The case, which dates back to 2017, has long been a major political talking point in Andhra Pradesh.
Political Opportunism and Broken Promises
Parvathi expressed deep anguish over the current government’s priorities. She pointed out that while the police have shown rapid progress in investigating cases involving individuals who criticized the families of Pawan Kalyan and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the investigation into her daughter’s horrific murder has been completely sidelined.
“When he was in the opposition, Pawan Kalyan repeatedly brought up Sugali Preethi’s name to attack the then-YSRCP government. But now, after being in power, he behaves as if he doesn’t even know who we are,” Parvathi told reporters.
She further alleged that after Kalyan became the Deputy CM under the current Andhra Pradesh Government, crucial evidence in the case was tampered with, and DNA reports were intentionally altered to shield the culprits.
“Pawan Kalyan is a Selfish Politician”
Parvathi leveled serious allegations against the JSP chief, labeling him a “purely selfish politician.” She recalled how, prior to the 2019 elections, she had met Kalyan, who promised to stand by her family and ensure justice.
“If he had questioned Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu with even ten percent of the intensity he used against the YSRCP government, this case would have reached a conclusion by now,” she said. She also claimed that when she questioned the lack of progress, JSP leaders and cadre, including leader Gade Venkateswara Rao, insulted her and her community.
She questioned why Kalyan had failed to fulfill his promise of speaking with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Contrast in Government Responses
During the press conference, Parvathi drew a sharp contrast between how the previous YSRCP government and the current alliance government handled her grievances:
- The YSRCP Regime: Parvathi noted that when they sought justice, the previous government immediately appointed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Additional SP Ramadevi, which confirmed that sexual assault had indeed taken place.
- The Current Alliance Regime: She alleged that the current government is actively trying to suppress the SIT findings. She also claimed that when she attempted to launch a peaceful “Wheelchair Yatra” in 2025 to demand justice, she was heavily restricted and harassed by nearly 300 police personnel.
Demands for Direct Accountability
Parvathi demanded that the alliance government openly admit if they used her daughter’s tragedy solely for political gains. She urged the Deputy CM to take immediate action, oversee an impartial investigation, and punish the accused.
She concluded by mentioning that YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had expressed deep sorrow over the withholding of benefits due to them under the SC/ST Act by the Chandrababu Naidu administration, and assured that the YSRCP legal cell would stand by her family until justice is served.
