The undemocratic arrest of Pudi Srihari, State General Secretary (Media) of the YSRCP party, is termed a “blatant misuse of state power.” Srihari was taken into custody from his residence in Tadepalli on Wednesday morning, triggering sharp political reactions across Andhra Pradesh.
Srihari, who served as Chief Public Relations Officer to former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and currently handles media affairs for the party, was allegedly detained without adherence to due legal procedures. Party leaders claim that police not only carried out an “illegal arrest” but also seized his mobile phones and laptop without proper authorization.
YSRCP leaders have strongly condemned the incident, calling it part of a broader pattern of political intimidation under the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government. Tirupati MP M. Gurumoorthy termed the arrest “an assault on democracy,” alleging that state machinery is being used to silence opposition voices. This is about the systematic targeting of those who question the government.
Timing Raises Questions
The timing of the arrest has further intensified the controversy. YSRCP leaders allege that Srihari’s detention was deliberately carried out to divert public attention from Jagan Mohan Reddy’s scheduled visit to the Juvvaladinne fishing harbour in Nellore district a visit aimed at highlighting issues concerning fishermen and alleged privatization concerns. “The government is clearly rattled,” party leaders claimed. “When it cannot counter the narrative politically, it resorts to arrests.”
“Red Book Governance” Allegation
The ruling establishment operates under what it calls a “Red Book governance model” a reference to alleged targeted actions against opposition leaders. According to the YSRCP Party, the arrest is being framed not as an isolated incident, but as part of a larger struggle over democratic space in the state. The party maintains that such actions only strengthen its resolve.“ History has shown that attempts to suppress opposition only make it stronger,” a party spokesperson said.
Legal Battle Ahead
The party has lodged a formal complaint with Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta, alleging violations of due process and constitutional rights. YSRCP leaders have made it clear that they will approach the judiciary to challenge the arrest.
Conclusion
As political tensions escalate, the arrest of Pudi Srihari has become a flashpoint in Andhra Pradesh’s evolving political landscape. It represents more than a legal issue; it is being projected as a test of democratic values, freedom of expression, and the limits of state power.
