Yellow Media dictates, Govt acts

The coalition government in Andhra Pradesh is increasingly being seen as functioning not on facts, but on the dictates of select media houses. Reports published in Andhra Jyothy and Eenadu are being treated as unquestionable truth, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan acting on them without verification. Any negative report against an officer is swiftly followed by transfers, raising serious concerns over administrative independence and due process. This has led to growing public perception that governance is being influenced not by elected leaders, but by media figures like Vemuri Radhakrishna and Cherukuri Ramoji Rao’s family.

A recent case highlights this pattern. An official, Bhavani Shankar, was posted as Director of the Pithapuram Area Development Authority on March 16 based on recommendations from the Deputy Chief Minister’s office. Within days, a report in Andhra Jyothy labeled him a “corrupt officer,” and he was immediately transferred to FiberNet. The publication even claimed credit for triggering the transfer, openly projecting its influence over government decisions.

In another instance, action was initiated against IAS officer Neelakantha Reddy based on a media report claiming he had met former Chief Secretary K.S. Jawahar Reddy. However, subsequent facts revealed that no such meeting took place, Jawahar Reddy had neither attended the event nor met the officer. Despite this, administrative action was pursued, raising questions about reliance on unverified reports over institutional intelligence.

These incidents expose a deeper concern: the apparent erosion of governance systems. Instead of relying on intelligence agencies, official reports, and due verification, decisions are being driven by media narratives. Analysts warn that such a pattern reflects a breakdown in administrative judgment, where perception overrides facts, and governance risks being reduced to reactionary responses shaped by headlines rather than reality.
